Research Faculty: The Genetics and Public Policy Center (GPPC) of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics (BI) seeks a highly qualified candidate for a new position at the level of Research Faculty. The successful applicant will hold an appointment in the Berman Institute and be located in the GPPC’s Washington, DC, offices. Applications will be reviewed beginning Jan. 5, 2012, and will continue until the position is filled. Start date is negotiable, but no later than July 1, 2012.

The primary duties and responsibilities of the job: The Research Faculty will work with the GPPC and BI faculty and staff to develop an independent program of research that complements ongoing efforts in both the Center and the Institute. Funding for the position is guaranteed through June 30, 2013, with the expectation that success or demonstrated promise in applying for extramural support will result in extension of the appointment. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to ongoing work at the GPPC related to ethics and policy issues in: newborn screening; large-scale genetic cohort and biobank research; the return of individual genetic research results; whole genome sequencing; and direct-to-consumer genetic testing. The Research Faculty will be expected to develop and submit grants in conjunction with Center staff, conduct qualitative and/or quantitative research, and develop high-quality manuscripts for publication and presentation. Clear, concise writing for a wide range of audiences is a critical skill in this position.

Education: A demonstrated interest in ethical and policy issues related to the translation of genetic research into public health benefits is critical. A doctoral degree or equivalent in Public Health, Public Policy, Science Policy, Bioethics, Health Outcomes Research, Medicine, Law, Human Genetics, Health Behavioral Sciences, the Social Sciences, Political Science, or a related field, with experience applying disciplinary methods to related scientific and policy issues, is required. Training in bioethics and previous research experience conducting and analyzing interviews or focus groups and designing and analyzing surveys are desirable. The candidate must have outstanding written and oral communication skills and have the ability to work within a multidisciplinary group, and must be able to work both independently and collaboratively to meet deadlines.
