This month Myriad Genetics began marketing its proprietary test for breast cancer genes BRCA1 and BRCA2 directly to consumers in several Northeastern states. Some health care providers believe it will lead to inappropriate testing or worse.

In a decision that placed cost concerns above public health, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services rejected a petition asking the agency to strengthen standards for genetic testing laboratories. 

American Society of Human Genetics releases policy statement on direct-to-consumer genetic testing

The statement cites "risks that consumers will choose testing without adequate context or counseling, will receive tests from laboratories of dubious quality, and will be misled by unproven claims of benefit."
